Oft-injured Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo will be out indefinitely after tearing in his Achille’s tendon following an argument with the Sedin twins over which video game was better, NHL 95 or NHL 94.
Witnesses said Salo was playing a pick up game with the Sedins when the dispute started on the bench during a scrimmage in Finland.
“You couldn’t see what they were talking about, but all of a sudden I saw this look of pure hatred and anger come over the face of Henrik. Or was is Daniel? Can never be sure,” said witness Sven Jannsen. “Anyway, it was weird, they started arguing and Sedin just started putting on a hat, making a point, taking it off and backing it it up as if he was two people. Then it just got out of control.”
Jannsen said Sedin called the players from both teams over to the bench and explained what happened. Sides formed quickly and a brawl erupted when someone suggested the blood featured in NHL 93 when someone lost a fight put it ahead of the pack in his mind.
Salo managed to escape the initial brawl largely unscathed initially, but drew the ire of now-Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger when he made an off-color comment off the ice.
“Those guys fight worse than the Hartford Whalers, and they’re too bad to even exist anymore,” Salo said.
Pronger, who played for the Hartford Whalers from 1993-1995, was featured on that team in both NHL 93 and NHL 94 as a member of the Whalers. He knocked Salo to the ground and stomped on his ankles, tearing his Achille’s tendon in the process.
When confronted about what started the feud, Henrik (Daniel?) Sedin was livid.
“He tried to say NHL 95 built on the success of NHL 94. Bullshit. Bullshit,” Sedin said. “The introduction of the one-timer, breaking the glass, being able to save your records? Come on! That’s fucking hockey. I scored 124 goals with Pavel Bure in season mode. You know how I know that? NHL 94. That’s fucking how.”
Following that statement, Sedin put on a baseball cap before continuing.
“Seriously Henrik, good point,” apparently Daniel Sedin said. “And when he said the best part was the introduction of multi-game injuries in 95, well, we reacquainted him with it.”
Salo, who has been injured 35 times over the course of his career, said he will never back down.
“Except for that snake bite and the nut shot, all of my injuries have been NHL 95 related. And you know what? I’m not sorry,” Salo said. “They took a great game and made it better. Fake passes, drop shots, trades? Come on. I mean, in 94 you could totally just get the goalie stuck in the corner of the net, skate across the ice and score. That’s some bullshit.”
Salo was later placed under arrest after pulling a gun on this reporter for suggesting Nintendo’s “Ice Hockey” was his favorite game.
“You deserve to be arrested!” Salo said as police dragged him away. “Your understanding of 8-16 bit hockey video gaming is flawed! Flawed I say!”
