Millions of hockey fans took to the streets Sunday night to celebrate what many are already calling “the Inevitability on Ice” after the heavily favored Canada defeated the United States with hockey’s poster child Sidney Crosby potting the game-winning goal before nearly 20,000 fans on their home turf.

“We all knew this day would come,” said Paul Johnston, a Vancouver resident. “But now that the moment that everyone knew was coming is here is just…just tremendously adequate.”

Canada won the gold medal game and final event of the 2010 Winter Olympics in dramatic fashion, defeating the underdog United States 3-2 in overtime when Crosby put a snapshot past Ryan Miller to clinch the win. Canada had led the game since the first period until Zach Parise tied the contest at 2 with less than 30 seconds to go in regulation.

‘Miracle’ screenwriter Eric Guggenheim, who also wrote the script to the Canada win, said he was pleased by how the evening’s event turned out.

“I couldn’t have written it better myself, which is true for obvious reasons,” Guggenheim said. “You know when they brought me in to help salvage the Olympics after the opening ceremony debacle, I was skeptical. But everyone really dug deep and brought together a story that virtually no one on earth was surprised to hear.”

Wayne Gretzky, who lit the Olympic torch to open the games, said the win, followed by the closing ceremonies was just what the country needed to reinforce the world’s stereotypical image of Canada.

“Canada is good at hockey, the world needed to be reminded of that,” Gretzky said. “Our country is also filled with dancing mounties, giant inflatable beavers and Michael Buble walks around singing all day.  And Michael J. Fox has been a great sport about us kidnapping him for a few weeks too.”

He added “That’s really what the Olympic spirit is all about after all — reinforcing stereotypes. And we done good.”

Immediately following the interview, Gretzky finished his Labatt Blue and left on mooseback to tend to his maple syrup farm.
