News of Team USA’s 2-0 win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals Wednesday evening left many Americans baffled, with the general populace under the impression the team had won gold with their stunning victory over Canada three days earlier.
“Wait, they’re playing again? What is this?” said Todd Stevens, watching highlights of the game at a bar. “You beat Canada and you win right?
USA moved onto the semifinals and will now compete for at least the bronze medal after Wednesday’s win but some, like Mike Smith of Harrisburg, Penn., refused to believe it.
“Nah man, you got that shit all wrong,” he said, finishing a Coors Light. “Everyone made this huge deal about it Sunday because we beat the Canadians and it was like the Miracle on Ice, a huge fucking upset. Just like in 1980, man, we beat those Ruskies good, won that gold, killed Communism dead. We did it again. U-S-A! U-S-A! Take that socialized medicine.”
When it was pointed out to Smith that the Americans didn’t actually win gold by defeating Russia in 1980 and had to fend of Finland in the gold medal match two days later, he still scoffed.
“Aw come on man, that’s not even a country,” he said.
Not all were as dismissive as Smith, however. Brooklyn resident Mary Jo Renney was surprised to learn that the Olympic tournament was over, but also disappointed.
“How much longer is this gonna go on?” Renney said. “I’m all for patriotism and all that, but come on. I’ve got Yankees pitchers and catchers reporting. Wrap it up boys.”
