Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper has threatened to banish Sidney Crosby to the Yukon if he doesn't bring home gold at the 2010 Olympics.
Thousands of angry Canadian hockey fans poured into the streets of Vancouver Tuesday night, bemoaning the Team Canada’s paltry 8-2 victory over Germany to move them onto the quarterfinals in the Olympic tournament.
“We don’t deserve to move on,” said Pierre Boucher, while setting a Canadian flag aflame. “How do they expect us to believe in this team when they can’t even beat Germany by a dozen goals?”
Team Canada is under enormous pressure to win gold on their home turf — pressure that was only intensified Sunday when the United States stunned them with a 5-3 victory. Canadians nationwide wore black armbands Monday in solidarity, commemorating a the loss Prime Minister Stephen Harper called “a dark day for the nation.”
The Canadians will now move on to face the high-powered offense of Russia, which features superstar scorers Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and Ilya Kolvalchuk.
Toronto resident Jennifer St. Louis, in Vancouver for the games, said she expects a lot from Canada in Wednesday’s matchup.
“At least 15 goals, all shorthanded. And if Crosby doesn’t become a wizard and turn Ovechkin into a rabbit, Ima burn the city down,” St. Louis said.
