Hockey has repeatedly been dissed in favor emotionally unstable people ice skating in unison to bad music in ridiculous outfits.
Team USA Forward Patrick Kane was spotted furiously trying to land a triple salchow Monday morning which sources say he hopes to break out in time for Team USA’s quarterfinal game Wednesday in hopes of luring wider coverage from NBC.
NBC has consistently declined to show ice hockey on prime time network television, drawing the ire of hockey fans worldwide, most notably during Team USA’s stunning Sunday victory over Team Canada.
A witness told ITB late Monday night he saw Kane alone in a practice rink in Vancouver trying to perfect the move.
“He kept saying, ‘come on, come on Kane, Jeff Zucker can’t turn down the triple. He lives for it,” the witness said.
Teammate David Backes said he wasn’t aware of Kane’s secret pursuit, but said he supported it if true.
“We got beat out by people wearing body suits with leaves glued to them for christsake,” he said. “We play our hearts out and we just barely got shown over a reairing of the 1987 Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Robert Bork. Yeah, that’s right, I know my U.S. History. Wanna fight about it?”
The eyewitness report came just hours before NBC CEO Jeff Zucker announced that Wednesday’s qualifying game between Team USA and either Belarus or Switzerland would be shown solely on Telemundo Tuscon.
“We feel as though this could open the world of hockey to an entirely new audience,” Zucker said. “Hockey only stands to benefit from tapping the Spanish-speaking southwest. You can’t spell American Olympic hockey without ‘Hola.’”
He said during this time NBC will repeatedly air the Feb. 11 episode of The Office for three hours, which featured a brief segment in the first five minutes of the show that referenced the Olympics.
